Clarke and the Himselfs is Heart-Warming Rock and Roll

C&TH is heart-warming rock and roll originally from Boise, Idaho. One self, psych rock band, Clarke performing live with a drumstick in hand, guitar strings under her thumb, vocals that cut right to the point with a Moe Tucker rhythm laid underneath, with C&TH, she takes basement rock fuzz, pop precision, molten neo-psych, weirdo gutter punk while singing exception art/psych damage pop songs. Since 2013 she has released five albums. Clarke and the Himselfs (Curly Cassettes, 2013), Clarke and the Himselfs II (HIB, 2014), The Well-Rounded Clarke and the Himselfs (Scavenger Cult, 2015), Clarke and the Himselfs and Friends (SC, 2016), In Your Heart you Know She's Clarke and the Himselfs (CC, 2017) Throughout this time she's been touring nationally and internationally. Daytrotter and Paste Magazine listed C&TH as #1 for Rock and Roll and #4 for in general for their best of 2017 list.

Clarke and the Himselfs re-amalgamated in 2011 at Grandmas House, in Boise, Idaho with three shows where Clarke performed, for the first time on drums, guitar, and vocals, with Demmi Netson as an addition on percussion. Before this interval, there were 11 self-recorded multi-tracked C&TH albums spanning from 2004-2011, with live performances taking a different shape than they did with the 2011 incarnation. Shortly there-after Clarke moved to New Orleans where she would write the bulk of the material that became 'Clarke and the Himselfs' (Curly Cassettes, 2013) and 'Clarke and the Himselfs II' (Heart in Box, 2014).

The 2015 Scavenger Cult release 'The Well-Rounded Clarke and the Himselfs' would see Clarke teaming up with David Strackany (Paleo) and recording in Portland, Oregon in less than 33 hours on David's 1" tape machine, which famously broke three times during the process, and was partially repaired by chewing gum at one point. 18 songs would be stripped down to 10 in what would become the critically acclaimed debut Vinyl LP, which found Clarke moving closer towards a more professional sound, while still retaining her DIY roots.

At this time, when she was not on tour, Clarke was living in Boise and playing shows with Clarke and the Himselfs and Friends, the core of which was made up of Demmi Netson, William Bendler (Bimsclix Atrolla), Otis Crook (Braided Waves) and also featured less-regularly Brett Netson (Caustic Resin, Built to Spill), Trevor Netson and Rex Arnold. And Friends took on a more doom-oriented, psychadelic, acid-washed atmosphere than the garage-rock prone C&TH and would eventually record 'Clarke and the Himselfs and Friends' (Scavenger Cult, 2016) Produced by Brett Netson and Clarke, and the 2015 live album 'The Name of this Band is Clarke and the Himselfs and Friends'.

Most recently, she released 'In Your Heart You Know She's Clarke and the Himselfs' (Curly Cassettes, 2017) which was in some ways a spontaneous album between Clarke and long-time friend and frequent collaborator Tuck Nelson. The album was written and recorded in a three month period surrounding Clarke coming out as transgender and beginning hormone therapy treatment. Recorded in various places along the Oregon coast, with Clarke recording the tracks and sending them, along with a rough mix, to London, England where Nelson re-processed and re-mixed the signals in a process that involved over a thousand emails back and forth before the album was finalized in March of 2017.
